Kada Lori Reimuller (Meryl Streep) sazna da njen sin Robbie (Seth Adkins) ima epilepsiju, ona u počeku vjeruje medicinskom osoblju u pogledu toga koja je najbolja metoda da se ta bolest dovode pod kontrolul. Međutim,kako se Robbijevo zdravstveno stanje naglo pogorša Lori postaje frustrirana i očajna, te odlučuje da sama istraži određene tretmane. Ona tada odlučuje da proba jedan alternativni tretman i tog trenutka dolazi u sukob sa medicinskim osobljem koje ne dozvoljava da on napusti bolnicu, a spremni su da preduzmu pravne mjere kako bi to spriječili. Lori tada kreće u borbu protiv medicinskog estabišmenta.
