Guido Contini (D. Day-Lewis) je slavni redatelj čiji su filmovi obilježili svjetsku filmsku umjetnost, no, snimio je i nekoliko neuspjelih filmova. Sada je na početku novog projekta, ekipa je okupljena, kostimi spremni, čeka se još samo glavna zvijezda, Claudia (N. Kidman), koja ne želi doći na snimanje, dok ne dobije scenarij. Međutim, scenarija nema. Nije uopće napisan. A Contini nema pojma o čemu će raditi film.
